The DESIRE team have produced a working paper on Distibuted Cataloguing based on the experiences shared at the Gateways Workshop in Newcastle. It describes current practice in a number of gateways including SOSIG (http://www.sosig.ac.uk), Biz/ed (http://bized.ac.uk), EELS, DutchESS, ADAM and EEVL.
The Internet offers great potential for distributed cataloguing, where librarians and academics can add resources to a gateway from geographically remote locations simply by working at their PCs.
This paper raises some of the issues involved and points to the many different models currently being piloted. We hope that the gateways will continue to share experiences on this issue, with a view to improving future strategies.
