Subject gateways and other services using ROADS

This page lists those services which are running either a partial or a full ROADS-based subject gateway. An interesting exercise for people new to ROADS-based gateways, or gateways in general, is to play with some of these services and see how different they are in look, feel and functionality. The Web-based user interfaces for ROADS-based gateways are easy to configure to whatever individual style people want; this can be especially useful for people interested in converting an existing gateway or index into a ROADS-based service, and who want to retain some of the "look and feel" of the current service.

ADAM - Art, Design, Architecture & Media Information Gateway

Main contact: Rebecca Bradshaw -- rebecca@adam.ac.uk

Sample search: mackintosh

ALEX - a catalogue of electronic texts

Main contact: Eric Lease Morgan -- eric_morgan@ncsu.edu

Sample search: twain

URL: http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/alex/

ALEX, the catalogue of electronic texts, is an example of a "conversion gateway". ALEX started life as a gopher-based collection of resources; after conversion into a WAIS-based system, searchable through the Web, the catalogue was automatically converted into a ROADS-based gateway system. The gateway index contains some 2,000 resources, the subject matter being the full-text of publications e.g. "War and Peace" in its entirety. As well as searching across the resource descriptions, you can also search across the full-text of several of these resources in one go; another recent development automatically generates a PDF file out of the contents of a located and selected resource.
